Astra (Pantoum en el cielo)

Se encontraba reparando un vehículo
Chevrolet Astra, de modelo reciente,
al parecer de su propiedad, cuando
fue atacado por sus victimarios.     Respira.

Era un Chevrolet Astra, recientemente pintado
azul marino, con una raya amarilla por arriba.
Fue atacado por sus victimarios en la luz
del día. Su mujer se arrimo a su cuerpo después.

El cielo, azul marino, con una raya amarilla,
llovió en el medio día, un relámpago entregado,
cuando cayo, nadie mas se arrimo a su cuerpo.
Sintió el treno en el aire, las gotas de lluvia

en el medio día, vio un relámpago entregado,
un rayo lo tocó, le tronó su pecho.
Sintió el treno en el aire, las gotas de sangre.
En los últimos momentos de su vida,

un rayo lo tocó, una bala le tronó su pecho.
Era el tiempo de las aguas en Zapopan
en los últimos momentos de su vida.
Las tormentas le daban taquicardia.

Era el tiempo de las aguas en Zapopan
cuando conoció a su amante. Respiró.
Cada noche con ella le daba taquicardia.
Quería terminar con su Chevrolet Astra.

Cuando conoció a sus amante, sonrío.
Se entrego a los últimos arreglos, apurado,
quería terminar con su Chevrolet Astra,
venderlo, zafarse del mal gasto, comprometerse.

Se entrego a los últimos arreglos, una boda,
con la hija de la vecina, su amante. Vio su vida,
lo vendió, se zafo del mal gasto, se comprometió.
Al tomar sus últimos respiros de un aire dulce,

la hija de la vecina, su amante, corrió a ver su vida,
tuvo treintaidos años de edad, al salir de su casa
al tomar sus últimos respiros de un aire dulce,
se entrego a las ultimas memorias, la voz de su amor.

Tuvo treintaidos años de edad, al salir de su casa,
no temo ver su sangre el momento que llego la bala.
Se entrego a las ultimas memorias, la voz de su amor,
cuando se encontraba reparando su vehículo. El Astra.


Lupe Méndez is a Poet/Educator/Activist, CantoMundo Fellow, a Macondo Fellow and co-founder of the Librotraficante Movement. He works with Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say to promote poetry events, advocate for literacy/literature and organize creative writing workshops that are open to the public. He is the founder of Tintero Projects and works with emerging Latinx writers within the Texas Gulf Coast Region, with Houston as its hub. His publishing credits include prose work in Houston Free Press, the Kenyon Review and Norton's Sudden Fiction Latino: Short Short Stories from the United States and Latin America, and poetry that appears in Huizache, Luna Luna, Ostrich, Revista Síncope, Pilgramage, Border Senses, the Los Angeles Review of Books' newest channel, Voluble and Gulf Coast Journal. Mendez earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has been an educator for the last sixteen years.
